Beneath the surface of collaboration and innovation, a deeper strategic message emerged: <strong>Huawei is leveraging intellectual property to build long-term global influence in digital infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when Huawei remains restricted in several Western markets due to geopolitical tensions and cybersecurity concerns, the company is presenting itself as an advocate for transparency, open innovation, and respect for international IP frameworks. The forum was not just about celebrating its &#8220;Top Ten Inventions&#8221;,  it was a clear signal to the industry: <strong>Huawei is mastering the global patent system and using it strategically.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The numbers behind a strategic machine<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at Huawei\u2019s 2024 IP metrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>37,000 patents filed<\/strong>, a record for the company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>6,600 international PCT applications<\/strong>, making Huawei the top filer globally (as it has been since 2014)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$630 million in patent licensing revenue<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Three times more royalties paid than received<\/strong>, indicating heavy investment in collaboration and licensing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Real-world impact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2.7 billion 5G devices<\/strong>, <strong>1.2 billion Wi-Fi devices<\/strong>, and <strong>3.2 billion multimedia products<\/strong> licensed under Huawei patents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>48 Fortune Global 500 companies<\/strong> are directly or indirectly using Huawei\u2019s IP<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, <strong>Huawei isn&#8217;t just selling hardware, it\u2019s embedding its technology into the very DNA of global networks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Open Source + Patents: a hybrid strategy<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Huawei doesn\u2019t lock everything behind proprietary walls. Quite the opposite: it\u2019s simultaneously a major <strong>contributor to open source<\/strong> and <strong>shaper of global standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its <strong>OpenHarmony<\/strong> codebase expanded by 10 million lines in 2024, with <strong>8,100+ active contributors<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>openEuler<\/strong>, its open source OS, surpassed <strong>10 million installations<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Huawei contributed <strong>10,000 technical submissions<\/strong> to standards bodies and published <strong>over 1,000 scientific papers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It also launched <strong>Chaspark Patent<\/strong>, a free patent search platform enhanced with <strong>AI-powered semantic search and summarization<\/strong>, aimed at democratizing innovation, especially for independent researchers and startups in developing countries. This <strong>hybrid approach open source plus patents  is a long game<\/strong>: Huawei builds ecosystems where it remains central, all while promoting an image of openness and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Telecom operators should care<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As telecom networks become more complex and globally interdependent, IP is no longer a niche legal issue. It\u2019s a core strategic matter \u2014 for CTOs, CISOs, and even CEOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three reasons why telcos should pay attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technology dependency<\/strong>: Even if an operator doesn\u2019t buy Huawei hardware, its services likely depend on technologies under Huawei\u2019s licenses \u2014 often without full visibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital sovereignty<\/strong>: How can operators ensure autonomy when key protocols and standards are influenced by actors outside their jurisdiction?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration vs. control<\/strong>: Should telcos partner with Huawei under transparent, well-negotiated terms \u2014 or invest in more sovereign, local alternatives (at higher cost)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The rise of a global industrial strategy<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Huawei\u2019s approach sends a clear message: <strong>IP is no longer just about protection,  it\u2019s about power, negotiation, and ecosystem control<\/strong>. Inspiring, because it shows how IP can fuel shared innovation. This is not a call to isolate or vilify Huawei. It\u2019s a call to <strong>approach collaboration with intelligence, vigilance, and strategic intent<\/strong>.
